CHRISTINE's TRAVELLING DIARY.... CC/DK and the TGs 2006 … and beyond … well before anyway …

The first quarter of this year has been busy and very exciting on many levels. After a quiet and restful Christmas my youngest brother Colin and his delightful wife Rachel along with their brood: Liam, Aaron, Connor and Jamie …. Came to stay for one night on new years day. A great way to start the year. It was a joy to be able to share our home with them all.

As we were waving goodbye to them, we also waved hello to our lovely friends Dave and Christy who run Stereoscout records on the Isle of Man. They also stayed for one night on their way back to the Island after a Christmas break in Tennessee.

Things settled down for me for a few weeks then as I began writing for the next album (don’t hold your breath it’ll be a while yet … I take ages!). Bob was back and forth to London working with Corinne in preparation for the release of her first cd on EMI.

During this time a trio of young men from the Isle of Man came to stay with us. They are collectively known as Back Door Slam and are in the process of writing material for their first release. They are: Davy Knowles: amazingly talented electric guitarist and singer, Jamie Armstrong electric Bass and Ross Doyle drummer. They’re a very exciting blues driven band and we have high hopes for their progression into the rock/blues world over the next year or so. It’s been great having their enthusiastic and infectious energy around the place.
My first foray into live work came early this year with a band gig at Cox’s yard in Stratford-upon-Avon on Friday January 27th. A new venue to me, upstairs in a small but perfectly formed bar/arts complex near the river. I’m sure that in the summer it’s a delightful place to sit and have a coffee watching the ducks … it was a bit nippy in January!

The audience was incredibly well behaved … polite and attentive and only really got excited towards the end of the night; by which time they seemed pretty enthusiastic. Several friends turned up for the gig including Diane and Bryan Ansell and their eldest: Marcus. Dave Armstrong from the Island and a long lost acquaintance from Canada Larry Mason! Wow.

Bob trained it to London on Sunday, to record Top of The Pops and then T4 on Monday before flying out to Madrid, all in the run up to Corinne’s debut release …

Our second gig of the year was a memorable gig at Skegness Butlin’s on Sunday January 29th. This is almost a local gig for me now. We were there as part of a weekend of “Blues” … mm? It was cold. Very cold. I haven’t been near a Butlin’s camp site since I was 18 and a Red Coat at Clacton! Oh the memories! We had 2 sets to do: the opening set upstairs at 8.30 and the penultimate one downstairs at 10.30. The venues were incredibly soulless, huge open spaces with regimented rows of plastic chairs and formica topped tables, in uninspiring glaringly red and orange décor; do you get the feeling I might not have appreciated my surroundings?!

We at least had a sound check for the first show which went surprisingly well actually but led us into a false sense of security. By the time we got to do our second stint the punters had quaffed a fair amount of booze and a blue haze of secondary fag smoke hung in the gloomy atmosphere! I normally insist on a no smoking policy wherever I perform as it has a detrimental effect on my health almost immediately these days. So that wasn’t my favourite experience.

To make the scenario even more interesting the band before us had been extremely loud and played raucous twiddly guitar ROCK. If –you- know –what- I- mean? Get the picture?

Anyway … we survived but only just. Dave says we just confused them. Ah bless. Whatever the outcome we certainly earned our crusts that night.

I made good use of the next week by getting down to write. I enlisted the help of Bryan my neighbour and all round good egg. His experience of writing many novellas to support his games and model soldier out-put came in very handy! It enabled me to focus in on story lines and also gave me someone to report to … I’ve done my home work see! And I did. No less than three songs came out of our collective effort … some of which may get an airing this coming solo tour … hurrah.

At the end of this week – February 3rd to 5th – Steve Lima, who produced 5 songs on Into The Light, came up to help me set up a recording system onto my computer and also to start the long process of demo-ing and arranging new songs for the next cd! Hurrah again. Bob also returned to the fold late on Friday night. On Saturday morning our lovely friend and car Angel extraordinaire, Chris Howarth came up to give my little car the once over before the next batch of shows.

Whilst Steve and I were recording upstairs, Chris was outside working hard on the car, while Bob was in the office talking to excited people around the Globe about Corinne and down the corridor strains of Back Door Slam could be heard as they rehearsed their own material! A veritable bee-hive of creativity and productivity. I loved it. We all sat around our kitchen table that evening for a feast! It was fab. Our neighbours Diane and Bryan, turned up later in the evening to join in the festivities. We had fun to say the least.
The delightful Corinne - A Number 1 artist!

What we saw on our walk... (below)

The next day … a little worse for wear but still enthusiastic, several of us hiked over the local highways and by-ways breathing in the cold but fresh February air. Steve and Chris left after lunch and a few hours later an old friend of Bob’s turned up, Mick Holland, a wonderful guitar player in his own right who now plays exclusively Flamenco guitar … brilliantly!

He was also the person to introduce Bob to Corinne’s talent many moons ago. He mesmerised Davy, Bob, Bryan and myself with his awesome playing just sat round the kitchen table. He tried to teach us all how to play a particular style of rhythm … not very successfully on my part but both Bob and Davy did really well!

Monday February 6th was the Folk Awards ceremony in London and armed with a rare and precious invitation, I got a train down to London and checked into the hotel booked by the BBC for the event (they didn’t pay unfortunately!). I met up with my old friend David Suff for a cup of coffee and a chat before bumping into Richard Thompson (who received a lifetime achievement award!) and Simon Tassano, RT’s long time sound engineer and tour manager.

It was delightful to catch up on each others’ news before getting ready for the main event. David and I had arranged to accompany one another for the evening and met in the foyer to walk down to the venue near the Barbican only to find out once we’d arrived that we would be sitting on different tables … doh! I ended up on a table with Ralph McTell and his gorgeous wife and daughter; Wiz Jones and his lovely wife along with Bert Jansch with his also lovely wife then Dave Smith
and the delightful Johnny Dickenson, a nominee for best musician! What a glittering table it was.

The event itself was good fun. High spots were Paul Brady’s performance, also a lifetime achievement ward, RT of course!

And Chris While’s singing of Matty Groves was sensational! I managed to behave myself and applauded loudly for everyone! I was thrilled to be invited up to sing a rousing chorus or two of “Meet on Ledge” with Fairport Convention … what a privilege.

It’s always a great reminder that I’m part of a larger community of musicians who all work extremely hard and are not only exceptional at their work but love what they’re doing too. I love the feeling of bon homme and connectedness. It’s also great fun going round hugging and kissing everyone afterwards!

I managed to squeeze in a singing lesson before returning to my country retreat on Tuesday! I spent the week writing and rehearsing. Bob came back from his travels on Friday and was able to come to the first CC/DK and the TGs gig of our tour proper in Reading’s Town Hall; not the best acoustic it has to be said but the audience who weathered the downpour that evening went away happy.

Monday February 20th Corinne Bailey Rae’s single “Put Your Records On” went on sale! I spent the day with Steve Lima working on the songs we started the previous week and early evening I made my way to Oxford Street where Corinne and her band were set to do their first “In-Store” at HMV at 5.30. A large crowd gathered in growing excitement as the time approached.

I was privileged to be right in front of the stage in front of the barrier, next to a gaggle of photographers! One of our discussion group stalwarts was also right at the front … Squidney! Hurrah. The whole event was a great success and afterwards my privileges continued … I was invited along to a wonderful restaurant where Corinne continued to work giving several interviews over dinner, while Bob and I along with emi’s press co-ordinator William and his partner Coman ate in quiet splendour!

I worked with Steve again the next day and had a singing lesson later in the day. On Wednesday morning my lovely hairdresser Barbie, came to the hotel I was staying in with Bob, to re-do my new hair style! A great success in itself. Later that day I made my way to Aldershot arriving far too early.

Pick Withers arrived about the same time and presented me with a pair of strange looking (and smelling!) percussion instruments called Cashishee … he also gave me several lessons in how to play them … I was a little over awed at first but really enjoyed using them throughout the tour.

The People at Aldershot are always delightful to work with though I often find the sound of the room difficult to sing in: it’s incredibly dry and harsh to my ears and therefore not much fun but the audience were with us from the very first mistake!! And there were many that night. It just seemed to add to the enjoyment somehow … ha, ha, ha!

Another couple of hours with Steve on Thursday before heading back to Nottinghamshire. I drove up to Whitby mid afternoon on Friday and managed to find our B and B easily enough. This gig was packed to the gunnels and very exciting for everyone. Helen Knight and her girlfriends made the gig leaving Ollie back at the ranch baby sitting. There was an impromtu party back at my room afterwards where we consumed copious amounts of Chinese! Oh the Rock’n’Roll lifestyle we lead.

We all have friends in the area and so split into 2 groups to visit Robin Hood’s Bay … Pete Filleul and I to see Norma Waterson (Martin Carthy was on his way the a gig in Chester) and the rest of the band visited Steve Philips in Fylinthorpe, literally round the corner. We had a delightful time with Norma who has the best selection of biscuits ever! She regaled us with fascinating stories of her time in Monserrat many years ago; Pete has a house there now! It was great for me.

I went onto to Newcastle later to pick Bob up from the train station and then onto Alnwick playhouse; another full attendance and great show. Bob, bless him, drove all the way home. Hurrah. We both drove to London on Sunday evening with the news that Corinne’s single was only kept off the number one spot by Madonna! Bob flew out to Zurich the next morning and I stayed with Dave Kelly and his gorgeous family till our next gig in Illfracombe on Wednesday, taking in a couple of singing lessons along the way.

Illfracombe is a gorgeous place, even in freezing conditions and the theatre itself a delight. We thourouly enjoyed the show and afterwards it was Pick’s turn to play host, this time for a late Indian take away! Though it was cold the next day it was also dazzlingly bright and absolutely beautiful; the drive to Worcester was fabulous. I love playing Huntingdon Hall not least because my good friend and agent, Chris Yaeger is always entertaining. Another good show under our belts if a little under attended … it was very cold out that night. Pete Emery came to stay that night and found it hard to believe the car thermometer when we arrived at 1am … it read minus 7!!!! He spotted that one on my rear tyres looked a little flat and so … bless him! … offered to change it. What a sweetheart. We were both cordially invited for a warm lunch at Diane and Bryan’s around 1pm. Hurrah for heart-warming and delicious food! And many thanks to Diane for providing us with such wonderful hospitality!

We arrived in Lichfield with time to spare and had a good look round the Guildhall. Our dressing room was one of the chamber rooms around whose walls were framed photographs of Mayor’s past and present … quite often they looked like those daft photos you have done at the sea side where the body of the photo is painted on a panel and you simply have to poke your head through the hole where a face should be! What larks Pip!

This show was well attended and full of enthusiastic people some of whom were very young! Hurrah. I drove myself home that night … not quite so cold but there was still plenty of grit to dust the car. I left for Worthing early-ish and arrived many hours later exactly on time! How I did that I really have no idea. All week, Bob had been keeping me up to date with record sales of Corinne’s album which was released that Monday … it had been a very giddy-making time. She was in pole position with no one near her to catch up … yippee!

Bob’s gorgeous sister Chris and her equally gorgeous husband Ken came to this show along with other gorgeous family and friends: Susan Jane, Chris, Sheila and Mike … I stayed in their delightful home that night; always a joy. Chris Howarth and Ian and Sue James also attended along with a few Collister virgins … hurrah as ever! The gig was massive and the audience … small but select. However daunting the room may have been, the audience overcame their nerves and made us feel very welcome and appreciated. There was even champagne! And miracles of miracles our cds turned up! At last!

I spent a delightful day in Chris, Ken and Susan-Jane’s company on Sunday when the official chart was announced … Corinne Bailey Rae number has the one album!!!!!! Yess!!!! Everyone I know is thrilled for Bob of course because they by-and-large don’t know Corinne but I’m thrilled for them both as they’ve worked so very hard for this success … and yes it is in deed very sweet. If you look at the “Thank yous” on the sleeve notes, I get a mention for support and the use of my sofa bed .

Stamford before the crowd descend...
..and Stamford in full flow!
I had a couple of well earned days off and then back to it on Wednesday 8th March in Stamford … a local gig! Diane and Bryan came that night and we met up back at the ranch … so-to-speak for wine and tortilla chips … I know how to live the high life!! The gig itself was great, plenty of energy both on stage and off. This was the first time I remembered to photograph the audience to prove I’m not making this all up!

Tivoli's huge and energetic audience
Wimborne and the Tivoli Theatre was next on our travels and one of my favourite venues with the best staff ever! This was a very successful night not least because we managed to double our audience from last time … great! It was a lovely evening and full of fun. We have a great deal of that for sure. I was the only one to stay in Wimbourne that night and so had the furthest to drive the next day … 233 miles to be precise! But it was a sunny day and I felt rested so I set off mid morning and took my time, stopping every now and then for sustenance. I really enjoyed the journey.

It was my first time to Southwold and … it may be my last … I’m sure on a sunny afternoon it’s delightful but by the time I got there about 3pm it had turned bitterly cold and was an ominous slate grey. I took a walk into town hoping to find chips … to no avail.
It’s a pretty town with a lighthouse in its’ streets … very strange!
The venue was camp as knickers sea-side frothy pink curtains with white table cloths on the tables and unfortunately the worst sound equipment and engineer we’ve had to deal with … ever!
He did his best but that just wasn’t very good. We soldiered on and made the best of a very bad sound, managing somehow to make light of the situation.
Lucky for us the audience (not our biggest attendance!) were on our side and seemed to enjoy the evening.

Armed with a bottle of pink champagne and several packets of crisps, it was all back to my room for an almost-end-of-tour party! We really do know how to live it up!

I left relatively early the next morning in order to pick Bob up from home on our way up to Ripley in Yorkshire. He’d been away most of the week in Paris and Milan (without me!) and was only stopping off on his way to New York L.A. and Austen Texas! We played in the tiny but perfectly formed town Hall in Ripley to a very large crowd of mostly Blues lovers … I think we just about got away with the country songs … I think … they were very excited and vocal in their support, a good time was had by all!

Bob and I drove onto Manchester Airport after the gig … it was nearly 2am by the time we actually booked in … poor Bob (no really!) had to get up at 7 in order to check-in for his and Corinne’s flight to New York; I stayed in bed till 10.30am … luxury! While Bob hurtled towards the New York skyline I hurtled towards bristol’s road works! Argh! I eventually found my way to the Folk House. I was early so had time to look around the shops … hurrah. I bought … party straws for Diane and Bryan’s kids … nothing for me … oh well never mind.

This was our final gig of the tour and although it took some doing , the end result was great … sometimes Sunday can have that effect on an audience … everyone was sooo polite … but managed to loosen up by the end of the night. Paul Dodgson and his lovely partner Hatty turned up for the first half with Pauls gorgeous children, Poppy 11 and Freddie 6 … they did well to last that long!

We all hugged and said our goodbyes ,,, we’re back for a couple of gigs in May and July and there’s a plan to do more shows in October beyond that we don’t know … anything could happen!

I followed Dave back to stay there one more night … I had an osteopath session the next day in West Hamstead … it was Dave’s birthday too! Happy birthday Dave!!! I’ve been home a couple of days nursing a throat thingy … good timing eh! I’m feeling much better today, hurrah. I’m rehearsing now for my solo tour starting March 27thin East Grinstead and also writing nmore to add to my first crop of songs … all is well all shall be well.

Thanks for stopping by to read my meanderings. Do join the emailing list if you haven’t already and of course drop by the discussion board and have your say! Hope to see many of you out there soon please do come up and say hello. Much love

Christine xx
